JOURNEY FOR HUMANITY MARCHERS ARRIVE IN SALT LAKE CITY

The Salt Lake City community greeted the group of marchers walking across the United States in a Journey for Humanity, on August 2, 2006. Gathered in the city’s Government Building, they warmly welcomed the marchers and listened to them speak about their experiences on a 3,000 mile march, intended to raise awareness and action about the genocides of the past, as well as the on-going genocide in Darfur. Among the speakers were Fr. Sipan Mkhsyan, who was representing the Western Diocese of the Armenian Church of North America, as well as marchers, Vahe Abovian and Hasmig Tatiossian. The gathering concluded with a question-and-answer session and what turned out to be an “intimate discussion” as Albrik Zohrabyan, one of the marchers, expressed.

Among the many reasons that instigated these marchers to engage in this journey is their realization that “history is not inevitable” and that all of us “have the power to create waves of change through our choices and actions,” articulated Hasmig.

Another marcher, Levon Sayadyan commented, “It’s imperative that all those who attended become part of the Journey, and as we march, they each do their part in telling others about what they heard tonight.”

The marchers are en route to Washington, D.C., where they will arrive in early November. Throughout the journey, they will hold rallies in major cities, the next of which is Denver, Colorado. In addition, they are meeting with elected representatives to promote genocide-related legislation in the House and Senate. In South Salt Lake City, they and community members met with Representative of Constituent Services, Ashley Martin, at the office of Congressman Jim Matheson.
